Frequently Asked Questions

You’ve announced several LSW moves over the last few years. What makes this one different?

  • LSW has operated multiple satellite locations across the region since 2017. Our educational model is centered on being responsive and adaptive to our students. To this end, we routinely partner and collocate with other organizations as opportunities arise to support students in the neighborhoods where they live and work.
  • This move, however, specifically impacts our downtown Milwaukee headquarters (currently 555 N. Plankinton Avenue), which serves as a central location for student enrollment, volunteer recruitment, staff collaboration, and so much more that cannot be coordinated through satellite locations alone.

How was this particular site chosen?

  • LSW evaluated several scenarios for buying or leasing our next headquarters. Consideration was given to the space needed, strategic goals for student service, and the long-term impact on the organization’s infrastructure.
  • After collecting student data, exploring available options, and reaffirming our desire to move out of downtown while simultaneously keeping a centralized location, we toured the Palmer location.
  • LSW’s Board of Directors engaged in seven months of due diligence ahead of finalizing the selection of the Palmer site as our next headquarters.

What new features can I expect to see at the new site?

  • The layout of this space and additional square footage offers opportunities to have several programs, classes, and one-on-one tutoring occurring concurrently and without disruption to one another.
  • Virtual learning is here to stay. About 30-40% of LSW students engage in distance learning. As such, there will be a fully equipped virtual broadcast room that will allow instructors to better engage and interact with students remotely.
  • GED testing needs have increased due to several factors. Palmer will have a full GED testing center on site. Students will no longer have to go off site to another agency to take GED exams. In addition, this will offer an opportunity to reach more of the community who may not be LSW students but need access to GED testing services.
  • There is a lot more to be excited about and we look forward to sharing it with you in the spring of 2025.

Will you close other locations?

  • No, there is no plan to close other locations. As mentioned, our satellite locations are responsive and adaptive. We have made a commitment to the northwest side of Milwaukee and Waukesha, and that commitment remains.

How does this support the financial sustainability of the organization?

  • Throughout LSW’s sixty-year history, we have made considerable investments in our leased spaces. Those spaces have served significant value to the organization, but when the leases expire, we are back at square one.
  • The Palmer relocation solidifies our presence in Milwaukee. It also ensures that we are being good stewards of our resources by investing in the future of the organization.

Is this neighborhood accessible to all students/volunteers?

  • Yes, Brewer’s Hill is accessible to all. It is conveniently located near the freeway.
  • It is also near a bus line. Our current location is no longer on a bus line, requiring students to walk two blocks. The new location is only about a block away from a bus line.

How accessible is parking?

  • LSW will be renting parking spaces in the lot next to the building. In addition, there is ample street parking.

Will there be a disruption in programming?

  • No. LSW will begin creating a transition plan for programming that will be shared in early 2025. LSW’s current lease does not expire until December 31, 2025. This provides plenty of time to transition from one location to the other in an intentional way. More to come on this topic.

How will this move be communicated to students, stakeholders, and the greater community?

  • LSW has already hosted several information sessions that occurred at the end of June and beginning of July 2024. A summer newsletter will also highlight much of the information shared. This fall, the LSW community as a whole can sign up for tours of the new building ahead of construction. Additional information sessions regarding the transition plan will be offered and open to the public.

How can I help?

  • LSW is always recruiting volunteers.
  • Share or consider contributing to our capital campaign.
