Codex: The Lost Words of Atlantis Game

This app is formatted as a compelling game storyline so learners are solving challenges or helping game characters solve challenges as they learn. The core gameplay revolves around crafting English phonemes, onset-rime patterns, and sight words to “decode” an ancient alien language. The player builds phonemes and words to unlock secret locations inside major archeological sites around the world as they discover the secrets hidden at Atlantis. This game helps them see and learn more about real-world areas outside their current city, all while learning and practicing basic reading skills.

The Competition

The $7 million Barbara Bush Foundation Adult Literacy XPRIZE presented by Dollar General Literacy Foundation is a global competition challenging teams to develop mobile applications for existing smart devices that result in the greatest increase in literacy skills among participating adult learners in just 12 months.

Team MKE

Milwaukee Knowledge Exchange (MKE) brings together Literacy Services and the YWCA Southeast Wisconsin to maximize the scope and reach of the X-prize applications to adults with academic needs and those facing barriers in southeast Wisconsin. MKE collectively serves 1,700 adult students each year and accounts for over 40% of the GED/HSED outcomes in the region. By joining forces, we hope to maximize the distribution and impact of the educational apps designed specifically for adults.
