Adult Basic Education (ABE)

Designed for adults who want to improve their basic education skills (reading, writing, and/or math), or prepare for beginning GED©/HSED instruction.

We offer a variety of learning methods to meet each student's unique educational goals. Class formats vary among sites, but may include:

  • One-on-One Tutoring: One or more 90-minute session(s) per week, scheduled according to student needs and tutor availability
  • Small Group or Classroom with an instructor
  • Learning Labs: Guided independent study*
  • Drop-In Tutoring*

* Scheduling and availability vary by location

Foundational ABE

We use a variety of curricula, including the evidence-based Wilson Reading System©, to help students develop reading and spelling skills. Students also learn basic grammar and language skills. We accept students of all abilities, including those with very limited skills and/or those with learning difficulties.

Comprehensive ABE

Our holistic approach to language arts and math study incorporates contextualized instruction in academic subjects, including history, social studies, science, and other areas. Comprehensive instruction builds reading comprehension, vocabulary, writing skills, and mathematics in preparation for transition to GED©/HSED work.

Basic Math

Basic math includes simple arithmetic with whole numbers, decimals, fractions, and beginning algebra. Students may work solely on math or in tandem with other ABE studies.

Meet ABE student, Tiffany.

Tiffany was motivated to improve herself because she believed her daughter deserved a mother with the best skills to nourish her growing mind. She enrolled at Literacy Services with one goal: to become a better reader. As she builds her skills, she frequently exclaims how valuable her learning experience is to both her and her daughter, Darii. Each week Tiffany faithfully sets the best example for Darii, to be sure she has the best opportunities ahead. Just after she completed the Wilson Reading System©, Tiffany welcomed her second daughter, Tiana, into the world, with a future made brighter by her own perseverance and hard work.
